Seaworld dolphin bites girl, prompts peta probe request

Your pet-privileges group People for Ethical Management of Creatures has requested the united states Department of Agriculture to research a study of the dolphin biting a park-goer at SeaWorld of Dallas, Texas.

PETA stated in the ask that a 9-year-old girl was bitten with a dolphin on Feb 22 while she was attempting to pet it. SeaWorld's Dolphin Cove exhibit enables site visitors to the touch and examine the whales.

"This incident and exhibit clearly endangered both dolphin and also the public," stated PETA counsel Brittany Peet within the request, which she referred to being an "apparent Animal Welfare Act breach." AWA's 9CFR 2.131 (c)(1) requires "sufficient distance and/or obstacles between animal and also the general viewing public in order to assure the security of creatures and also the public."

SLIDESHOW: WHEN Creatures ATTACK

"It's demanding enough for a lot-varying whales to become secured in SeaWorld's small tanks, but forcing these to communicate with site visitors is completely harmful," states general counsel to PETA Shaun Kerr. "SeaWorld's 'Dolphin Cove' is yet another illustration of the way the park's primary priority is profit, not the welfare from the creatures or even the safety of their visitors."

David Perle, a PETA spokesperson, told ABCNews.com that other children happen to be bitten by creatures at SeaWorld's parks. "Most lately in December 2012 an 8-year-old girl sustained puncture wounds while hands-feeding a dolphin at SeaWorld Orlando. And much more trainers happen to be hurt as well as wiped out by creatures at SeaWorld-the park has greater than 100 occurrences of Orca aggression in the own incomplete records," he stated.

In her own request, Peet stated the girl was petting a dolphin in the park's Dolphin Cove if this locked onto her hands and wrist so tightly the child's mother was not able to free her along with a SeaWorld worker needed to intervene.

The lady sustained bite marks and swelling to her hands and wrist, PETA stated.

PETA rejected to place ABCNews.com in contact with the household from the girl, stating that they would like to remain anonymous.

SeaWorld Dallas spokesperson John Carter told ABCNews.com they haven't received any word from USDA around the incident. "We [SeaWorld] are fully looking into this incident so we regret the guest experienced this throughout her visit. SeaWorld provides 1000's of safe interactions between our visitors and creatures every day, and occurrences such as this are few in number," he stated. Following the incident the lady and her family remained around the block and visited other points of interest.

Carter also stated the SeaWorld staff which was present at Dolphin Cove throughout the incident responded rapidly to help the guest.

SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment is possessed by Blackstone Group and works parks in Orlando, North Park and Dallas.

The did not immediately return a request comment.
