Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana and the second largest city in the state. Located on the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge takes its name from French explorers who found a cypress pole marking the boundary between two tribal hunting grounds and called it le bâton rouge—“the red stick.” The motto of Red Stick (as its still called by locals), “Authentic Louisiana at every turn,” speaks to the diverse cultural influences that distinguish this part of the country.
A college city, Baton Rouge is home to Louisiana State University (where Bart Bernard earned his law degree), Southern University, Baton Rouge Community College, and Our Lady of the Lake College. Students who graduate in Baton Rouge may be compelled to stay. The city was recently ranked by Portfolio Magazine as one of the “Top 10 Places for Young Adults.” It has a booming petrochemical industry and is the site of the second-largest oil refinery in the United States, operated by ExxonMobil. In 2009 Baton Rouge was named by CNN as one of the best places in the U.S. to start a new business.
